Scope of activities


GENERAL PROGRAM OF THE INSTITUTE ACTIVITIES 

Institute for genetic engineering and biotechnology undertakes activities aimed at scientific and expert development of basis for genetic engineering and derived technologies:

  • Realization of research projects (fundamental, applicative, development) and expert ventures – from gene to genome;
  • Evaluation of BH natural genetic resources and projection of management measures;
  • Realization of relevant elements of national programme of scientific and technological development of genetic engineering applications in food production, medicine, pharmacy, forestry, horticulture, environmental protection and associated areas;  
  • Expert analysis and studies in the system of quality control of living and working environment, food, GMO products, medicines, hygiene, cosmetics, protective agents etc.;   
  • Design, organization and realisation of biosafety system;
  • Cooperation with relevant institutions on the topics: genetic counselling, medical diagnostics, medico legal and forensic practice;
  • Assistance with creation and realization of strategies of scientific and technological development in the relevant field;
  • Design and transfer of fundamental, developmental and applicative solutions within the Institute competencies;
  • Coordination of organizational and functional network of institutions involved with molecular biology and biotechnology within the University;
  • Participation at all levels of higher education for the purpose of higher education institutions, industrial and societal subjects etc.;
  • Mediation in establishment and realization of interinstitutional and individual cooperation among domestic and international partners;
  • Publication of scientific work, expert opinions and promotional materials;
  • Other complementing form of scientific and expert work: own, contracted or ordered by the founder.

SCOPE OF REGISTERED ACTIVITIES

The scope of registered activities includes scientific and expert work aimed at facilitation of development of genetic engineering and ensuing technologies in B&H:  

  • Fundamental research in the field of gene (DNA), chromosomal and genomic engineering,
  • Fundamental research in early phases of development, structuring and transfer of genetic engineering based biotechnology,
  • Creative contribution in programming longterm projections in B&H of the development of biotechnologies based on genetic engineering,
  • Coordination of research and expert activities as a prerequisite for the development of priority biotechnology applications;
  • Realization of relevant elements of national programme of scientific and technological development of genetic engineering applications in food production, medicine, pharmacy, forestry, horticulture, environmental protection and associated areas;
  • Education of staff for genetic engineering and molecular genetics research,
  • Education of experts able to observe development and transfer of genetic engineering and biotechnology solutions and B&H and international level,
  • Expert analysis and studies in the system of quality control of living and working environment, food, GMO products, medicines, hygiene, cosmetics, protective agents etc.;
  • Cooperation with relevant institutions on the topics: genetic counselling, medical diagnostics, medico legal and forensic practice;
  • Provision of research, educational and expert service to legal and private entities in the domains of molecular genetics, genetic engineering and biotechnology and biosafety,
  • Coordination of organizational and functional network of institutions involved with molecular biology and biotechnology within the University;
  • Coordination of international cooperation in the fields of research and education;
  • Publishing scientific and expert publications,
  • Other complementing forms of scientific and expert work (own, contracted or ordered by the founder).

Longterm projections

 

Future program of the Institute incorporates extension of previously initiated realization of long term projections of development: 

  • DNA identification and characterization of BH natural resources,
  • DNA expertise for forensic and other medico-legal purposes,
  • Maintenance of human peripheral lymphocytes and animal fibroblast cultures – ground layer for research into cytogenetics, genetic toxicology and molecular pharmacology, 
  • Research into cytogenetic and geno-toxicological activity of physical, chemical and biological agents,
  • Implementation of GMO testing as a segment of biosafety system development,
  • Development of bioinformatics system as a support for molecular-genetic research,
  • Formation of a center for bioinformatics and biostatistics.
